We went to Lee’s Palace for dancing and it was the best. Yuula looked amazing, like these pictures don’t show anything, she looked like Isabella Rossellini. Afterward there were people all over the Bloor, standing in the middle of the road, jumping in front of cabs, begging to be let in. I’ve never seen anything like it. At five in the morning I came home and never want to...

Which Wards Voted for Who for Mayor This confirms what everyone I know suspects. I live well inside the zone for good people (pictured in purple) and the people who want to take away our bike lanes and streetcars and gay parades and marathons are people who don’t actually live in areas where these things exist and aren’t keenly aware that, for example, it will take three buses to...

Despite the election of Ford and the attendant emboldening of angry drivers who really do believe there is a war on cars, I am very happy about my multiple partner Halloween costume plans coming to fruition. Also, riding back to my island home on the most beautiful fall day there ever was, even if my tires were flat, and reading Motherless Brooklyn and sitting on the steps talking about how to...

Earlier tonight Toronto elected a mayor who beat his wife and thinks that bicyclists ultimately deserve to die if they insist on riding bikes. That’s not even an exaggeration - “My heart bleeds when someone gets killed, but it’s their own fault at the end of the day.” While mayors aren’t kings and can’t just do whatever they want, I am so worried about what...

I first listened to this week’s This American Life on unconditional love a few years ago and it is so uncomfortable and just sad and of course you think about like attachment disorder and borderline personality disorder and the pathologizing of trauma responses, which used to be very interesting to me and now aren’t that much, they just feel like dead ends. Now the amazing part is the...

Could there be anything more boring than magazine photographs of young, half naked white women?  No, there could not.

I went to a hidden part of High Park where I had never been before, maybe where the coyote lives, and it was so beautiful, it looked wild, but then Louise rolled on something dead and I had to force her to swim into the river over and over again so I could breathe and of course she was in ecstasy, all her favourite things at once, the forest and water and dead things and sticks and running like...

I want to hire these people to do my house, but it would be such a bad idea because it’s over-improvement for the neighbourhood and we’re not planning on staying more than 5 years. Maybe the next house. Or maybe at least my siding and deck?? If they even do tiny projects like that. Probably not.

A Film Unfinished at the Royal, you walk out and realize how dumb everything you say is. Then we said a lot of things anyway, mostly about public viewing of trauma images, which Susan Sontag wrote about better than maybe anyone in Regarding the Pain of Others.

I need a small studio space where you can make noise somewhere between Ossington & Roncesvalles (or in the Junction), Davenport & Queen. Tell me if you know of one.

Also, my day started like this. In a crazy hangover outfit. I barely even remember. It was not a successful day.

My aunts are visiting from Sweden, my cousin is living with me for a while, in the past three days we have eaten lunch at the top of the CN tower, which is surprisingly nice and surprisingly uncheesy, even if the food isn’t the best ever & we have gone to the harbourfront & biked around the island & had a picnic by the channel next to the boats & had a lot of sushi even...

Emerging from Union Station this morning, walking down Front Street at 7am, the first thing I saw was a seagull swoop down, pick up a baby pigeon from the road, fly a bit and drop it back on the sidewalk. When it was coming down its wings flapped a little, but by the time I walked by it was dead, slumped in a little grey pile against the side of a trash bin.

I went to see the Jenny Holzer exhibit at DHC/ART and it was all things I had seen at the Whitney a year and a half ago, but there was no one else there and it was much more private, quiet, the spaces were smaller and I read everything for a long time, until I felt awful. For Chicago is the worst, especially if you are looking at it with a man, especially a man you want to believe is good. I...

Tonight I went to DNA and had their 4 course dinner and the waitstaff wore plaid shirts again, which is not a good idea in wine-heavy restaurants. I think I could probably hibernate through the winter on this, I can’t even imagine their 7 course tasting menu (Jen, that will be our project, we’ll have to fast for a week first). My appetizer was a huge mistake, but the rest, oh my god....

Le Petit Hotel, the softest bed, sleeping before dinner at L’Orignal, oysters, cod, coffee, dessert, I want to go every day, it was the best ever. All the waiters wear the same checkered shirt, do not make my mistake and notice this only after a bottle of wine and wonder just how drunk you are, seeing triple, quadruple.

Yesterday morning I saw the deer on the island on the way to the ferry and the fog was so heavy it was as if there was no city at all, not even a tower. The day before I found a butterfly with half its wing torn off and it kept trying to fly, twitching on the pavement. I thought about bringing it into our studio, but if it was going to die it should do it somewhere nice, where maybe it was happy,...
