What my dad gave me for Christmas.
The winds that left palm tree pieces all over the streets last night made the sky so clear you could see every oil rig and San Clemente Island. You could see that Catalina was land and not a low and heavy cloud. At LAX there are 437 Starbucks and one delayed airplane, but I have The Savage Detectives and books full of puzzles.
This year I quit smoking. Not just once but twice. The first time with licorice and the second time with transparent stickers on my arms that gave me the best dreams, like I would put them on before bed just for that. Dreams about falling off the edge of the earth and racing horses and the police, glass boxes and mudslides and dreams about you. I quit a lot of things that were bad for me,...

Seeing all the sand under the boardwalk washed out and everything that came up from the ocean in Laguna, eating lobster quesadillas next to the sea. I want to move back to California so much sometimes. But not Orange County again.

My copy of ‘The Promise’ on vinyl arrived from Acoustic Sounds yesterday. Because they have the best packing. Anyway, disc 1 and 2 were there, but disc 3 was not a Bruce Springsteen record. It was a 120 gram copy of The Violinaires’ ‘Groovin’ With Jesus’.
