I’m bringing two bottles of champagne and a letter opener made of an endangered Hawaiian tree (that had already died) to Yuula’s house, where she lives in the best attic. Someone is bringing presents. And it’s warm enough that maybe I’ll even walk home at 7am. So that’s a good start. Goodbye, year.

I’m planning a field trip to a city I might want to move to. It wouldn’t be for a while because I am not ready to leave Toronto and I am not ready to sell my house and I think I will need at least two more years here until I’ll feel okay about it, but the winters are so awful and there are so many more beautiful places. But it is in the US and it would be hard to live somewhere...
On the north shore I saw a whale jumping and blowing water.
I had my make up done for the wedding and looked like a local correspondent from Benkelman, Nebraska.
A sun falling into the ocean, a giant hat for me, four cameras to watch my sister marry on the balcony over the beach.
At Lanikai the ocean is always green and there are always dogs and there are always fish. Sometimes turtles. It is the best place, it is impossible to not be happy.
We bobbed in the water and ate snails and played ukeleles and put diamond rings on our fingers.

Christmas in the ocean.
I’m at the airport in San Francisco for seven hours and it is so boring. There is nothing to do but eat sprouts and try on sunglasses and chew nicotine gum. I bought an airport dress because my Hawaii wardrobe is like two pairs of black jeans. I’m lying on the floor in my winter coat, I’m so so so tired and I’m Facebooking with my grandfather on the occasion of his 88th...
The women’s shelter I used to work at had an annual donor’s dinner. But it wasn’t at a restaurant or anything, it was in the shelter. In the dining room. The residents would have to leave due to privacy concerns and because seeing poor people isn’t any fun while you’re trying to enjoy dinner, right? It ruins the mood. They would be given some money to Ho-Lee-Chow...
I went to see Red at Bluma and it was alright. Most of the time when I see a play here and almost think it’s great I think of how much better it would have been in London and get sad. At CanStage I usually think of how much better it would have been even at Soulpepper, which is a really impressive company. But Jim Mezon was actually wonderful. Did you know he was in Road to Avonlea? It seems...
I have to start leaving for work earlier. For the past two days I’ve driven beside a truck full of pigs on their way to be killed and it makes me want to kill myself or join the man who stands at the corner of Strachan and Lake Shore every morning with a sign asking people to honk of they oppose the slaughter and become vegans.
Kill the land transfer tax, wound the city
Yesterday was Lucia. This is maybe the most beautiful Lucia celebration ever. I had to be Lucia a few times at Swedish school in Chicago because I was the only one with long blonde hair. Standing still of that long is an under-appreciated skill. Between that and oxygen deprivation from the candles, many Lucias faint and fall right down on the floor.
Commercials currently sound louder than most television shows because loudness is different than level or volume. The audio on commercials and on-air promotions is compressed and stays at or around its peak throughout - it is contained within a very narrow range and is sustained at the top of that range. Some specialty programming and children’s shows have similar compression, but in general...
In October Alex Atamanenko introduced a private member’s bill, Bill C-322 to ban horse meat products as well as the importation/exportation of horses for slaughter for human consumption. The rationale is that there is no regulation regarding the medication of horses, leaving open the possibility of people eating animals that have been administered drugs prohibited from use in food products,...
I went to see Tori Amos at Massey Hall because I had a second row ticket and I haven’t seen her since 2003 when she played that tiny interview show at the Shaw Theatre in London and I had a migraine and couldn’t see straight and that’s really all I remember. Tonight was 65% incredible and 35% super mortifying. Like your crazy aunt getting drunk and thinking she’s sexy...

This place is amazing, they rescue horses from slaughter. Can you believe people kill horses to eat them and the slaughter ban in the US was just lifted?? Give them lots of money.
Horses really are like taking a giant pony-shaped pile of money and setting it on fire.
