Yuula took these yesterday. The farrier was there. I did not realize just how small I am in comparison to my horse until I saw a photograph of us standing side by side. His back is 9 inches above my head!
It was my birthday. At six in the morning Kevin told me I wasn’t going to work because he had secretly arranged for us to take the day off and then he made pancakes with sugar and lemon and we got Yuula and drove out to the stable and rode in 40 degree heat and then swam in a lake in the middle of nowhere and got a bag full of oysters and ate them in my kitchen that felt like it was on fire...

I went to a party. Yuula learned to shuck oysters. We got drunk beside a fire. We went down a slide and sat under trees.
This is Ma playing it in 1997 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim, du Pré’s husband and her own conductor for her insane 1967 performance. Ma has also played her Stradivarius.
Yo-Yo Ma played Elgar’s Cello Concerto and I had been waiting for a year. There were no empty seats. A lot of people came because he is sort of a celebrity I think, people who didn’t know how the symphony works, like not knowing when to clap, clapping between every movement until Oundjian had to tell them to stop for real. But it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen performed...
