Patrick Cassidy - Funeral March
Cassidy writes movie music, really grand and humourless and beautiful things. This song is in the trailer for Tree of Life, but it was released in 1997 on a record called Famine Remembrance, commissioned for the 150th anniversary of the Great Famine. Although it was not written for film, I’m not sure there is anything more cinematic.
Since everyone died I’ve thought a lot about funeral music and what it’s supposed to do and I think this is it. It has to make it welcoming to have big feelings. Sometimes have them for you.
Funeral marches in general are a pretty great sort of music. Chopin’s funeral march on piano, not with orchestra. Shostakovich. Wagner wrote a good one. The first section of Mahler’s 5th symphony is the best one of all.
The 2012-2013 TSO season was announced and subscriptions went on sale. Owen Pallett is going to play at one of the New Creations concerts.
