My bathroom wall re-grouting has been my first house renovation failure. It is very boring. I’ve had to shower at work, the gym, and various people’s houses while working on this. Now I finished and it looks exactly the same as when I started because grout labelled white is not really white at all but sort of grey or old dirty grout coloured. Luckily it was a very cheap project because now I’m going to hire someone to rip everything out and re-tile the whole thing and I’m never grouting anything again in my life.

I went to look at this house in Dundas and it was perfect. There is a lot you can do with it but nothing that makes you want to die while it’s not done. It was built in 1870. The windows are the size of walls, the garden is beautiful, the street is amazing, it’s close to the stable, it’s super affordable. I would buy it right now but Kevin isn’t ready to move I guess. I can understand why. We thought about keeping both houses but maybe it’s not a very good idea. We thought about renting out our house in the city so we could come back whenever we want but I don’t want renters doing god knows what to this house. So we’ll wait. Whoever buys that place is the luckiest.

SMITH: I remember when I first saw your work outside. For me it was really strange because, as an artist, I never thought about making things outside. Other artists were working with language, but it felt really radical to put it outside at the time.  

HOLZER: I wasn’t sure I was an artist, so I thought maybe I just was throwing ideas out for people to consider. That took some of the pressure off. [laughs] The first street pieces were black-and-white posters with the Truisms, one-liners on many subjects written from multiple points of view. I went around late at night to paste these posters downtown. I put the next series of posters outside, too, the Inflammatory Essays.
