My friend Teri wrote this and it is a really wonderful essay.

When people I know have babies or plan to have them or talk about wanting them I sometimes worry. ‘You’ll change your mind one day’ seems to have been true for almost everyone I know. Except me. I’m going to be 33 years old next month and ‘one day’ doesn’t mean the same thing it did when we were 25. Sometimes I wish I wanted babies because it would be a known future. I have seen those lives a million times. But I have only seen a few lives lived without children, none very up close, and sometimes the possibilities that exist without them seem too infinite in both the best and worst ways.

At first, it was called Deathrose. DeFeo began working on the painting in 1958 and did not stop until eight years later. The name change might be taken as suggestion that The Rose came alive, ceased, in the course of its development, to speak to death, or, more precisely, to death alone. At least some of the interest of the work—of DeFeo’s oeuvre as a whole—lies in the way it excavates the territory between Eros and Thanatos. The rose is, in Greek mythology, associated with Aphrodite, who is often shown with roses garlanding her hair. It is the flower that most readily stands in for the female body, for female sexuality. But DeFeo’s Rose is not the bloom of purity, not the blush of first desire. It is more vagina dentata, an alluring but dangerous trap, a pleasure and a menace.

On the day of the Iraq invasion we were very angry and did not know what to do so we drove to Washington DC to join an anti-war protest we knew would be useless but what the fuck were we supposed to do? Instead we found only a pro-war rally on the steps of the Lincoln memorial, a group of Confederate-flag wavers who marched two middle eastern pro-invasion men up to the lectern like prizes. We took funny pictures in front of the Capitol building instead and then went home. On the American side of Niagara Falls I saw Cheryl Fell’s School of Business and it became one of my favourite things I have seen.
